David Fowkes – A Passion for the Unconventional

Recognised as one of the top jewellery designers in the UK, David is best known for his signature use of large, colourful gemstones and exclusive, one-of-a-kind pieces, both of which are seeing a massive surge in popularity as today’s discerning clients seek to reflect their own individuality and personal life experiences in jewellery.

David studied silversmithing and jewellery in Liverpool before developing his creative talents by working with artisan jewellers across the world. He returned to the UK in 1988 to set up his own atelier but still travels extensively to personally source some of the most important, rare and exceptional gemstones. David also works with one of the world’s leading stonecutters who provides exceptional gemstones for David to use in his jewellery. Each individual piece is designed and made by hand in his dedicated UK gallery and workshop at Thoresby Park near Nottingham with in-house goldsmiths working with a combination of modern technology and traditional methods.

A regular exhibitor at Goldsmiths Fair and a judge of the Goldsmiths Craft and Design Awards, David firmly believes that the pleasure in wearing jewellery is not just about how it looks but the emotional attachment it brings: “Through the experience of designing and creating something unique, sometimes combining gems and metals from existing pieces of jewellery, as well as introducing new elements, the owner has a strong emotional connection with the final piece and the joy of knowing it is totally bespoke.

“Coloured gemstones are popular because they often have meaning and connotations behind them.  They are also proving a sensible financial investment with such stones having consistently risen in price over a number of years and in some cases, given healthy double digit returns.” The company is a member of the NAJ (National Association of Jewellers) and has a strong ethical approach.
