Kerry Lawrence is a vitreous enameller working mainly in silver. From the outset of her enamelling career she has been excited by the prospect of designing and making larger forms. Her work therefore includes pieces such as beakers and cups, spirit measures, perfume-atomisers, containers and even tea-strainers.
Her design philosophy is simple – functional and beautiful. The majority of Kerry’s pieces are one-offs, a painting rather than a print. She approaches the enamelling design aspect of each piece as a small artwork on a canvas of silver. Kerry mainly uses the age-old traditional enamelling techniques of basse taille, champleve and cloisonne in her work and frequently blends techniques and transparent and opaque enamels in a single piece to achieve the colour palette and overall effect she is seeking. Inspired by artists such as David Hockney, famous for his masterful use of often vibrant colours, her enamel design tends towards the modern and bold, both in terms of the mark-making style of her underlying engraving and the choice of colour palette.
