Helena Russell is a Sheffield-based silversmith whose work is heavily influenced by mechanisms, traditional boxes and containers that stack together or incorporate intricate fittings. Using this inspiration she creates functional silverware—including boxes and candlestick holders—and kinetic jewellery. Each piece has been designed to invite touch and discovery through its mechanisms, multiple parts or by its shape and surface finish.
Within Helena’s practice she predominantly uses sterling silver but also incorporates base metals, such as copper and brass. These base metals are either left to naturally tarnish or coloured and patterned by using a variety of different patination techniques. Helena uses patination to change the metal’s surface to an array of different colours, including vibrant blues and deep purples.
