My work has always had a strong narrative element. The white frosty lusters that adorn my jewellery and silverware echo polar landscapes. In my early career I won a Royal Academy scholarship to travel to the Arctic to work with Inuit stone carvers. Having drawn inspiration from the Inuit culture, who tell folklore stories through their creations I went on to develop that idea. From my home in the Scottish highlands I began to look for inspiration closer to home, and discovered a lot of similarities in our cultures.
In recent years it is environmental issues such as climate change that are heavily influencing my design process. With the loss of natural habitats endangering species, it is an issue close to my heart. I strive to be an ethical maker and work with re-cycled metals and ethically sourced stones as it is integral to my ideology as a maker. My new collection of work is inspired by melting ice. The pieces tell a story, fragmented landscapes depict tiny gold polar bears balancing precariously on the edge. Stones become icebergs and diamonds become tiny sparkling footprints in an all to precious landscape.
